PTI's Arif Alvi elected as 13th President of Pakistan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s senior leader Arif Alvi elected as the 13th President of Pakistan.

Dr Arif Alvi secured 212 out of total 430 votes from NA and Senate, 45 votes from Balochistan Assembly, 41 votes secured from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and 22 votes from Sindh Assembly. 

As the main opposition camp remained divided, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP-P) nominee Aitezaz Ahsan secured 81 votes. The nominee of opposition parties JUI-F Chief Malauna Fazlur Rahman bagged 131 votes in Parliment.

Arif Alvi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Aitzaz Ahsan of Pakistan Peoples Party and PML (N) backed Maulana Fazlur Rehman were contesting for the seat.

Polling began at 10 in the morning and continued without any break till 4 pm.

Ahsan and Fazl could not cast votes for themselves as the PPP leader is not a member of the Senate while the JUI-F chief is neither an MNA nor an MPA. Alvi was the only presidential candidate who cast vote for himself.

The division in the ranks of opposition proved beneficial for the ruling PTI as it paved the way to get its candidate elected.

The PTI has a clear majority in National Assembly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. The party also got sufficient support from Balochistan from its candidate.

The Balochistan Awami Party, Grand Democratic Alliance, Pakistan Muslim League, Awami Muslim League, Balochistan National Party, BNP-Awami and Jamhoori Watan Party had given nod to support PTI’s candidate.

Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Justice Yawar Ali presided over the polling process while election commissioner Punjab, Zafar Iqbal Hussain, performed duties as returning officer.

PTI's Abdul Aleem Khan was the first to cast his vote in the Punjab Assembly.

Sindh Assembly 158 members of the Sindh Assembly cast their vote in the presidential election with five lawmakers abstaining.

Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh performed the duty of presiding officer. KP Assembly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, 111 out of 112 lawmakers cast their vote in the election.

Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth supervised the polling process in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. 

Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar acted as presiding officer.  

Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court presided over the election and Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Raza was the returning officer in the Parliament. Prime Minister Imran Khan also cast his vote through secret ballot for the presidential election at 3:15 pm.

PTI’s candidate Arif Alvi, who is the frontrunner for the slot of the President, has studied at the De’Montmorency College of Dentistry in Lahore.

He was the member of student unions protesting against the then-President Gen Ayub Khan. Later, in 1979, he decided to run for a Sindh Assembly seat in Karachi as a candidate of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Arif Alvi also served as the president of the Sindh chapter of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Alvi contested the general election in 1997 and 2002 but got elected in 2013 from NA-250. In the last elections, he contested and won from NA-247 Karachi.
