LAHORE - Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University (KEMU) Prof Dr Zafarullah Khan has called an emergency meeting of the academic council tomorrow (Monday) to register protest against the decision to downgrade the university to the college level without taking him on board or anybody else supporting its varsitys status. The sources said the meeting has been called after an influential group of doctors led by Dr Amir Aziz backed by some bureaucrats in Punjab government geared up its efforts to downgrade the KEMU and clinch a favourable decision. The group has been pressing the provincial government to revert the status of KEMU to college besides handing over its control to the University of Health Sciences. In order to counter the efforts of the rival group and prepare a future strategy, the KEMU top management and its faculty members have been asked to ensure their presence in maximum number in the meeting. According to the sources, five senior faculty members of KEMU including Prof Dr Asad Aslam Khan, Prof Dr Riaz Bhatti, Prof Dr Arshad Cheema and Prof Dr Khalid Masood Gondal requested VC Prof Zafarullah Khan to call emergency meeting of the academic council to highlight the issue. The KEMU management here on Saturday issued letters to all senior faculty members and other top management officials on to attend the academic council meeting. The sources said the meeting would take up one-point agenda to cope with efforts to convert the King Edward University into a college. The meeting is likely to adopt a resolution asking the government to take the KEMU management on board before deciding its future. A faculty member told this scribe that neither the VC nor its any other senior official was called in the recent high level meeting held at Raiwind in which the decision of downgrading the KEMU was taken without hearing the actual stake holder. While lamenting upon the role of the bureaucracy in this regard, he said that the meeting was attended by the Punjab Chief Secretary, Secretary Health and some influential senior doctors including Prof Amir Aziz who is not holding office in any public health institute but still calling all the shots in the management of the health department. When contacted KEMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafarullah Khan said that the academic council meeting was called to press the government to include the universitys management in all the future meetings to discuss the issue of its status.
