ISLAMABAD - With the restoration of Shahbaz Sharif government in Punjab by the apex court, ambitious District Nazims of the province have been cut to their size as Commissioners and DCOs have again frozen their uplift funds besides shelving their proposed projects, TheNation learnt on Saturday. The sources within Punjab government told TheNation that though no official order had been dispatched as yet to the Divisional Commissioners and DCOs in this respect yet they had been asked by the Punjab government to hold development funds of DNs as well as shelve their recommended projects. As per sources, the official letter to freeze the District Nazims Development Funds would be issued soon. No district Nazim in the province is able to utilise district funds for development projects in the province and the provincial ministry of LG&RD would soon re-launch the halted special audit of district governments, the sources said. It is pertinent to mention here that with the imposition of Governors Rule in Punjab on February 25, the legal, administrative and financial powers of District Nazims had been restored and Governor Punjab Salman Taseer had also released their frozen development funds. He had also directed all Commissioners and District Co-ordination Officers to respect the DNs and facilitate them for execution of their development projects. Before the imposition of Governors Rule in Punjab, DNs from the province had called on Governor Salman Tasser frequently asking him to play his constitutional role and the beleaguered DNs who were under the noose of special audit by Shahbaz Sharif government had also threatened to lead a long march to Lahore in the first week of March. Raja Ikhlas, District Nazim, Rawalpindi talking to TheNation said that the non-development budget of Rawalpindi District Government regarding raise in employees salary amounting Rs 51 crore had been released by the provincial government some two weeks earlier on the order of Governor Punjab Salman Taseer. As far as development funds of the district government are concerned, they had not been released during Governor Rule and now after the restoration of Shahbaz Sharif government in the province, we have listened reliably that these funds have been frozen again, he added. Ikhlas said that the DNs were keenly observing the attitude of Shahbaz Sharifs government after restoration. Before the imposition of Governor Rule, DNs had decided to lead a long march to Lahore but now we will make our next policy as per policies of Punjab administration, he noted. Tariq Basheer Cheema, District Nazim, Bahawalpur said that the provincial government had asked Commissioners and DCOs to stop development funds of district governments. Till today, no official notification has been issued in this regard, he said, adding that he would be able to comment in detail over it after releasing of notification. Cheema, who is close confidant of Ch Pervaiz Elahi said that DNs were looking at Punjab Governments attitude and would define their future line of action according to it.
