This refers to unanimously resolution passed by Punjab Assembly on March 31 asking the federal government to review its decision of imposing 17 per cent tax on agriculture inputs through presidential ordinance (The Nation, April 01). It was rightly pointed out that the federal governments decision to impose 17 per cent tax on agricultural inputs like tractors, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and agricultural implements will have not only negative affects on agricultural products but also it will hit the poor farmer hard. Further, the new taxation would discourage use of fertilizers and other inputs which will ultimately decrease agriculture production besides reducing countrys GDP. Through your esteemed newspaper, I hereby request Sindh Assembly members to pass similar resolution if they have not done so far. I also suggest the federal government to take stern action against the categorical tax evasion by the industrialists and businessmen and launch such vigorous campaign from Karachi being major city of tax evaders. MOHAMMAD KHAN SIAL, Karachi, April 2.
