ISLAMABAD - M Hafeez finally succumbed to the pressure and decided to quit the Twenty20 captaincy, but justice was not done as Hafeez alone is not responsible for the entire episode but the team management including coach is mainly responsible for the whole debacle.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) must not take decision of giving the responsibility of captaincy to anyone but it must consult with the experts and technocrats. Luckily, Pakistan team is free for almost five months or so as they have no international activity so it will make no sense in appointing a skipper, when there is no cricket.

PCB Management Committee chairman Najam Sethi, first, must seek explanation from Shahid Afridi, as on what grounds he launched serious attack on Hafeez and others while he himself is equally responsible for the worst showing of the national team in World T20.

Why is Afridi always given special treatment by the board and why does he always escape from punishment for outburst in media? He has also committed breach of the PCB code time and again. If a player speaks reality, he gets show cause notice from the board for breach of code, but when Afridi breaches the code more seriously, he gets away with that. What kind of justice the cricket board is doing?

On what grounds and performances, Afridi once again wants to be a captain of national side while one or two innings are enough to judge him. He should not be handed over the national side captaincy just because of few certain individuals’ desire.

Afridi proved a disaster in the past when he was given the responsibility of captaining the national team. He quit the captaincy of Test team in the middle of the series and his blunders cost the country World Cup in India in 2011 and all of a sudden, he once again made his intentions clear and wanted to be captain of the national side. Afridi has committed a huge blunder by openly criticising the entire team and passed on the burden of defeat on others. What was he doing for the team rather he is equally responsible for the entire team debacle.

The PCB must not melt under unwanted and uncalled for pressure especially PCB chairman Najam Sethi must not openly support Afridi. For his action at the airport, Afridi must be given explanation letter as no one should consider himself above the sports.

Misbah should be handed over T20 captaincy as well while Umar Akmal or Ahmed Shahzad should be named vice-captain and groomed under the watchful eyes of Misbah, just like other great teams do. Both Umar and Ahmed are almost guaranteed a place in all the three formats and the PCB should consider them keeping in mind long-term future.

The ball is now in PCB’s court as the nation expects bold decisions which should be in favour of the team and country. Masses are very upset with the worst showings of the team and they will not accept anything less than complete operation clean up, which is very much need of the hour to salvage some pride and restore the confidence of the masses in national team and the PCB.

The lean period international break is a blessing in disguise so the PCB should utilise that period in the best possible way and should constitute different teams based on domestic cricket performances and arrange series of matches which will help PCB get a number of fresh faces, who can serve the country in the years to come.
