ISLAMABAD - After increasing the price of sugar by Rs 10 per kilogram at USC outlets just a few days back, the Government on Wednesday announced Rs 3.2 billion Ramazan Package which includes Rs 1 billion subsidy on sugar. Managing Director Utility Stores Corporation (USC), Muhammad Arif Khan, announced this during a press conference here on Wednesday. He said that additional subsidy of one billion rupees had been allocated for sugar only, besides Rs 2.2 billion for other commodities, in order to provide maximum relief to common man. He further said that people would get basic food commodities at 20 to 25 percent less than the market prices under the Ramazan Package at all USC outlets of the country. He said that 20 kg flour bag would be available at Rs 300 against the market price of Rs 580 and similarly the subsidised prices of other commodities one kilogram quantity would be; ghee and oil, Rs 103 against Rs 140, grain pulse (dal channa), Rs 58 against Rs 75, besan, Rs 56 against Rs 75, and dates, Rs 88 against Rs 130, in the holy month of Ramazan. He further said that sugar would be available at Rs 55 per kg against the open market price of Rs 70 per kg. 80,000 metric tons sugar, 150,000 tons wheat flour, 50,000 metric tons ghee, 50,000 metric tons grain, 3,000 metric tons white grain and 400 metric tons dates would be sold out under Ramazan Package, he said and added that about 30 to 35 percent people would be benefited from this Package. It is worth mentioning here that a few days before Ramazan, the Government jacked up the sugar prices at USC by Rs 10 per kg and enhanced its prices to Rs 55 from Rs 45 per kg. However, apart from these abovementioned commodities, the Government would give 5 to 10 percent subsidy on other 1,000 commodities available at USC outlets, he said and added that manufacturers of all leading brands available at USC agreed to sell their items at lesser rates. Arif said, We are facing loss at our outlets in far-flung areas, however President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani have directed us not to close these outlets as people should be facilitated from the Package. Price list related to Ramazan Package would be displayed in every utility store and the process of subsidy under this Package would be made transparent, he added.
