Babri Mosque, a relic of the Moghul Empire that withstood the battering of times for five centuries was destroyed on December 6, 1984. In the wake of its destruction, scores of Muslims were slaughtered at the altar of Hindutva. And this was done under the Congress rule. In the merciless desecration of this grand mosque, the BJP found an electorate that voted enmass for it in the next elections. Eventually, they won enough seats to rule India. Now the Hindu extremism is raising its ugly head again in India with the release of the inquiry report on the Babri Mosque. Eminent writer and journalist Kuldip Nayar has accused the two BJP leaders, L. K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, of being the co-conspirators of the December 1984. The surprising name being mentioned now is that of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The three leaders acted against the Supreme Court orders not to disturb the status quo. The central government also failed to stop the demolition of the Mosque and did so deliberately. An Indian court had ordered excavation at the site of Babri Mosque to determine if a Hindu temple had ever existed under it. This was ordered despite the fact that Professor B. B. Lal had already carried out an excavation in 1970 for The Survey of India. Professor Lals excavation did not show any evidence of a temple at the site. Fourteen sites were dug in Ayodhya but not a single Rama figurine was found. Ayodhya was mentioned in the famous Encyclopaedia Britannica for the first time in 1984 as the place where Babri Mosque is built on the Ram Temple site. Its previous edition of 1951 is silent about it. -BRIGADIER (Rtd) A. Q. ANJUM, Rawalpindi, December 3.
