ISLAMABAD - After showing positive growth in the first two months (July-August 2009) of the ongoing fiscal year 2009-10, industrial output has once against registered a negative growth of 2.64 percent in the month of September. According to the figures released by Federal Bureau of Statistics here on Friday, the growth of large-scale manufacturing (LSM) has declined by 0.65 percent in the first three months (July-September) of 2009-10. The Quantum Index Numbers (QIN) of LSM stood at 190.82 points in the period under review as compared to 192.07 points in the same period of the last fiscal year 2008-09. It might be mentioned here that the growth of LSM had showed positive growth of 0.17 percent in first two months (July-August) of 2009-10, after registering negative growth of 8.18 percent in last fiscal year 2008-09. However the said positive growth did not remain for long. The trade analysts are of the view that it was expected that positive growth of LSM would not exit for long as still conditions are not suitable for the industries in the country. However, they believed that this year too negative growth would witness because same problems were prevailing which were in the last year, as power crisis would not end by December 2009. The QIN shows industrial productivity of 100 items received from different sources, for example Oil Companies Advisory Committee (OCAC), Ministry of Industries and Production, and provincial bureaus of statistics. The OCAC supplied the data of 11 items, the Ministry of Industries and Production provided data of 35 items and provincial bureaus of statistics provided data of 54 items. The official data for petroleum products compiled by OCAC showed a negative growth of 11.14 percent. The petroleum products including kerosene (32.41 percent), high-speed diesel (7.56 percent), diesel oil (25.52 percent), furnace oil (21.36 percent), lubricating oil (2.39 percent), solvent naphtha (27.09 percent), and LPG (9.42 percent) registered a negative growth in July-September against the same months of 2008-09. Meanwhile in OCAC, the following products showed positive growth rate; jet fuel (0.83 percent), motor spirit (1.19 percent) and petroleum products (10.46 percent). Ministry of Industries and Production index registered a positive growth of 0.86 percent comprising 35 main industries in QIN of LSM. The industries showing positive growth include soda ash (11.18 percent), nitrogenous fertilisers (3.06 percent), phosphorus fertilisers (2.18 percent), cement (15.21 percent), coke-Pakistan steel (32.87 percent), tractors (24.13 percent), jeeps and cars (6.6 percent) and motorcycles (38.48 percent). On the other hand, the industries showing negative growth are cigarettes (11.62 percent), cotton yarn (0.23 percent), Hessian (12.30 percent), sacking (22.53 percent), caustic soda (20.24 percent), pig iron (38.81 percent), trucks (25.38 percent), buses (6.57pc), and LCV (44.04pc).
