Justice Rehman named as IHC CJ

ISLAMABAD - Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JPC) on Saturday proposed Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, judge of Lahore High Court, for appointment as the chief justice of Islamabad High Court and Anwar Kansi and Riaz Khan as judges of the IHC, and have also agreed to extend the tenure of four additional judges of the Balochistan High Court and six judges of SHC. Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman, judge of the LHC, is the son of former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Hamoodur Rahman. He was appointed as a judge at the LHC on October 30, 2006 but refused to take oath under the PCO promulgated by former President Pervez Musharraf in 2007. Riaz Khan, who belongs to Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, and Anwar Kansi from Balochistan would be appointed as the judges of Islamabad High Court that would start functioning from December 13, according to Law Minister Babar Awan. The JPC meeting, held at the Supreme Court premises, in the chair of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, was attended by two senior most judges of Supreme Court Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan , Justice (retd) Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed, Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC) Khawaja Sharif, Chief Justice Sindh High Court Sarmad Jalal Osmany, Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Federal Law Minister Babar Awan, Attorney General for Pakistan Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq and representative of Pakistan Bar Council Khalid Ranjha. All the four additional judges of Balochistan High Court Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Tahira Safdar, Justice Muhammad Noor Meskanzai and Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mengal, whose term ended on September 6, were given one-year extension. Out of Sindh High Courts nine judges, whose term expired on September 25, Justice Shahid Ali Bajwa, Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai, Justice Tufail H Ebrahim, Justice Irfan Sadat Khan, Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi and Justice Munib Akhtar were also given one-year extension. However, cases of Justice Bhajandas Dejwani and Justice Miss Rukhsana Ahmed were deferred till the next meeting, while Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikhs name was dropped. The cases of 12 additional judges of Punjab High Court; Justice Asad Munir, Justice Saghir Ahmed Qadri, Justice Mansoor Akbar Kokab, Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh, Justice Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari, Justice S H Nizam-ul-Hassan, Justice Tariq Javed, Justice K H Imtiaz Ahmed, Justice Manzoor Malik, Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Ejaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Syed Manzoor Ali Shah, whose tenure ended on September 15, were not taken up as Justice Khawaja Sharif CJ LHC is retiring on Dec 8. The recommendations of the Judicial Commission now would be sent to the Parliamentary Committee, according to the 18th Amendment, for approval. One source also said the commission will again sit in the second week of this month for the nomination of judges of Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court.
