KARACHI - Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association warmly welcomed M Asif on arrival from Sofia Bulgaria here on Tuesday morning where he become the second Pakistani after M Yousuf to win the world amateur snooker crown recently.

All the top brass of the PBSA from Asghar Valika to others were at the airport to receive the champion and other members of the Pakistan team including the president of the PBSA Alamgir Shaikh.

There was a pushing and jostling match amongst the electronic media persons who tried to catch the best shot of the new champion at the arrival lounge. An unassuming and shy Asif was brief but impressive in his talk when he thanked the PBSA for arranging funds to send him and  other team members to the IBSF championship.

He pleaded the government to provide facilities in towns and cities of the country for the promotion of the sports which has so far produced two world champions.  After finishing runners up in an event held in Dubai just before the Sofia event had bolstered his confidence and he was certain that with luck supporting him at crucial moments.

 he would do some thing special.

He said he had held his nerves in control in the crucial moments of the last two games to clinch the final and the crown. He said he would continue to work hard to win more laurels for the country in future.

The PBSA president Alamgir Shaikh who arrived with the team and who made possible appearance to the team in Sofia by arranging funds for the team’s departure, said he had borrowed the money to meet the travel and other expenses of the team.

He said Asif achievement was the proudest moment both for the player and the PBSA which had succeeded in sending team in all the recognised events despite facing financial difficulties.

He hoped that  the government would announce special cash awards for the victorious Asif who had done exceptionally well despite not getting the best facilities before and during the competition. The PBSA did whatever it could under the available resources and Asif made most of it by bringing good name to national sports.

Arif Taher Bhoy and Naveed Kapadia were among a host of officials were at the airport to receive the team.
