GUJRANWALA - The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry urged the federal government to immediately start construction of Kalabagh Dam in compliance with the Lahore High Court orders.

GCCI President Amir Hassan and Vice President Muhammad Amin said that the country was facing an acute shortage of electricity which had already played havoc with the countrymen because of industries’ closure and massive lay-offs are order of the day while the unemployment graph is going up rapidly.

“Everyone knows the existing dams are constantly silting up decreasing capacity to store water. The construction of Kalabagh Dam along with other new dams is desperately needed to store adequate water. It is believed that new reservoirs are necessary and indeed urgently needed to conserve water as the shortage of electricity, hydroelectric power is very costly means of generating electricity,” they added. They said that according to a conservative estimate about 30 million acre feet of water is being wasted into the sea because the country has no big water reservoirs to store it.

They said all the stakeholders should show maturity on the issue as it is in the national interest. “Otherwise, we will ruin the future of our coming generation with our own hands by pushing them into caves of darkness,” they said.
