RAWALPINDI - Young Doctor Association (YDA) Rawalpindi on Tuesday asked Punjab government to restore Rawalpindi Medical College Principal and Allied Hospitals (AHs) Chief Executive Dr Musaddiq Khan within 24 hours, who was removed from his post after a newborn was bitten by a rat in labour room of Holy Family Hospital, otherwise the young doctors would launch protest in the city.

While addressing a press conference at Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH), YDA office-bearers also demanded of Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to conduct again an impartial inquiry into the incident and take action against the real responsible instead of doing politics and sweeping pubic appreciation by firing innocent RMC Principal, the lone vascular surgeon of Pakistan. YDA Rawalpindi President Dr Umer Saeed, BBH General Secretary Dr Afzaal, Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology (RIC) President Dr Imran, Vice President HFH Dr Ashan, President DHQ Dr Abbas, Dr Umer Kaleem and Dr Waqas were the prominent, who held press conference. The YDA representatives condemned the rat-biting incident in Labor Room of HFH. They also denounced the move of Punjab government in which Dr Musaddiq was removed and said that the inquiry committee, formed by Punjab govt to probe into the incident under supervision of Director Health Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal, even did not hold Dr Musaddiq guilty in its final report. Despite the clean chit of committee its handed over RMC Principal, they said, CM’s step to fire Dr Musaddiq was unfair as it was the work of the hospital administration not of Principal to control the rodents in its limits.

They said that the rodents were everywhere in the hospitals and action should be taken against those who left the newborn baby unattended.  Pointing out the negligence of Building Department and other authorities concerned, the YDA office bearers informed that the government installed Air-conditioning system in HFH 30 years ago connecting it with all the wards to keep them cool, which got dysfunctional just three months after functioning.

“Now it has become a safe heaven for the rodents which reach to all the wards with out any hurdle” they said adding that the government was not releasing funds for cleanliness in the AHs.

They said that MS HFH was also informed in written by the Gynae doctors about presence of rodents in labor rooms, who (MS) wrote to AMS and DMS to take steps to purge the labor room from rodents.  However, in the entire episode, no mistake of Dr Musaddiq Khan was seen, therefore the government should hold impartial inquiry into the probe and punish the responsible, the demanded.

Replying to a query, the YDA President Dr Umer Saeed said that the government should not politically victimise the senior doctors or it would be very difficult for the doctors to provide heath facilities to the masses in government-run hospitals.
