MULTAN-Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi Institute of Cardiology (CPEIC) is in dire need of at least 120 staffers to make functional the newly-built emergency Usman Bloc to facilitate the cardiac patients. CPEIC Medical Superintendent Dr Syed Mukhtar Shah told this agency on Tuesday that they needed doctors, staff nurses, paramedics technicians, bearers and ward servants to run the new bloc. Built with donation by philanthropists,72 staff nurses were required for the new unit as to every bed there should be staff nurse to cater the patient, he said, adding that without the staff, it was simply impossible to run the facility. About the expansion of emergency, the CPEIC MS said that it would be 54 beds for which they needed separate staff. “I think around 160 staffers will also be required for the extension of the emergency for which we have written to the Punjab government and the health department.” Regarding complaints of unavailability of medicines at the facility, Dr Mukhtar Shah said that they tried their best to provide medicines to deserving patients free-of-cost but when the allocated budget ended, they were helpless for outdoor patients.

It is worth-mentioning here that two paediatrics undergo cardiac surgery daily in the facility in addition to the adult surgeries. At CPEIC, doctors were conducting around 1300 surgeries annually and 200 to 250 patients visit emergency while 400 to 450 patients get treatment from Out Patient Department (OPD) free-of-charge daily.

Expansion of the CPEIC is also in pipeline with an estimated amount of Rs1579.980 million on an area of 24 kanal in future.
