On 5th December, 1957 the first President of Indonesia issued an order which effectively expelled all Dutch inhabitants of Indonesia. Indonesia was a Dutch Colony until an indigenous revolution in 1945 began subvert the yoke of the colonial empire. The revolution ended in 1949 and established the Republic of Indonesia. Although the Dutch were able to win on the military front, the Indonesians secured political victory. This the period in contemporary history when more and more countries are able to break free from their colonizers. This led to a new wave of democratization across the world.
