Sunday Bazaars - safe havens for pick-pockets

KARACHI - Weekly bazaars have always been a subject of heated discussions amongst all and sundry due to their diverging views. On the one hand, there are the citizens who admire this venture of the government to help the poor and the middle class, in this era of unleashed inflation and price hike. On the contrary, some social circles dub these bazaars as the hubs of over charging, adulterated commodities and, above all, a safe haven for pick-pockets, thieves and even robbers. The Sunday Bazaar, arranged at DHA Phase-8, being the biggest and the most visited one in the City, has been the focus of Karachiites for a long time. During the last few months, many complaints regarding unusual and unpleasant presence and behaviour of the eunuchs and the so-called porters who had a license to deprive customers of their valuables were being observed there. This very phenomenon was behind the increasing graph of theft and pick-pocketing incidents were not being addressed by the authorities concerned. Muttahir Ahmed Khan, a freelance journalist, had to face embarrassment at Sunday Bazaar when her sister-in-law was deprived of cash, mobile phone and credit cards. "I along with my family visited Sunday Bazaar a few days ago in DHA. The whole area was full of eunuchs and so-called porters who were pestering the decent citizens and the families in groups. Another shocking aspect was the presence of the teenage porters, with baskets in their hands, who were circling around families and the visitors who had not bought even a single item. Some young porters started walking extremely close to us with two of them on the right side of the baby pram being carried by my wife and sister-in-law, he said. "Despite knowing that we did not have any item and need for a porter, they went on following us saying and within a few minutes, my sister-in-law realised that her handbag had been stolen away," he said, adding it was very shocking for her as she lost cash worth Rs2,200, a mobile phone, her credit cards and some other valuables. A few moments later, another lady cried there as she had lost her purse. Suddenly a very shocking fear struck the mind of the lady and she asked, "What could we do if they steal the child out of pram and run away? Is there any security to stop them? I do not think it is a secure place for the families with the babies." The porters and the eunuchs often commit crimes, many a times they were dragged out of the area, but they enter again due to lack of security arrangements, an official deputed at the security office of Sunday Bazaar in DHA Phase-8 told the victims when they went there to trace the culprits. The victims finally rushed to Darakhshan police station, where the concerned cop received the complaint on a plain paper and gave a carbon copy to the complainants without registering an FIR.
