Day of Solidarity

Against the backdrop of the tragic conditions of ruthless suppression of the Kashmiris living under the bayonets of the Indian armed forces, the people of Pakistan observe today as the Day of Solidarity with them, the 22nd since 1990 when Pakistan first began the practice, to demonstrate to them, India and to the world at large that they would never forsake their brethren across the Line of Control. But the sad reality is that it is only the people, and not the government of Pakistan, that now reaffirm their resolve to commit all possible help for the liberation of the part of Kashmir forcibly held by New Delhi. The governments since the time Musharraf threw his lot in with his Western friends and, in eagerness to please them, deviated from Pakistans principled stand that had been entirely based on Indias own commitments and the resolutions of the United Nations. One can, perhaps, understand the military dictators compulsion for getting legitimacy for usurping power, if not from the local public at least from powerful states of the world, and thus his going out of his way to curry favour with them. However, the succeeding democratic governments casual attitude could only be attributed to its sheer lack of comprehension of the key importance that the issue carries for Pakistan, rank ineptness in handling matters of state and excessive involvement in corrupt practices. One hopes that reflecting on the causes of observing this day would bring home to them the urgency in the resolution of the disputes on the internationally agreed basis. At the same time, the United Nations and among the influential powers, the United States, cannot escape the indictment for letting the Indian brutalities flourish in Held Kashmir. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been negligent in his duties for failing to address his energies to clearing the UN agenda item on Kashmir, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. In fact, the entire international community should feel the shame for not paying heed to settling this dispute and bringing the misery of the Kashmiri people to an end. However, it is the most powerful states in the world that invariably play a major role in conducting the global political game, and at present it is the sole superpower whose leader President Obama stands in the dock, facing questions about reneging on his words. Didnt you, Mr Barack Hussein Obama, declare at the hustings that without the resolution of Kashmir, according to the wishes of the people, there could be no peace in South Asia? Or were you simply trying to get the electorates support, like the rest of the run-of-the-mill vote seekers? But havent you even after entering the White House, secure in your position, reaffirmed the same views? His speechless figure that stands there once symbolised the hope of the enslaved nations and the oppressed in general. And with him also stands exposed, The Audacity of Hope he spelled out in his book of this title, as Robert D. Hodge, the author of the book, The Mendacity of Hope so irrefutably argues. The perceived strategic needs of his National Security team have apparently blurred his vision.
