Cement sector claims jump in input cost

KARACHI - The cement manufacturing sector seeks government support for its survival in the challenging situation of sharp increase in input cost that have forced the entire sector to a default like situation, experts said here on Saturday.
“The input cost has increased sharply in the last decade and there is lack of mechanism to pass on this burden to end consumers”, they said.
Due to all these challenges, the production capacity of the cement sector has reduced to the lowest level of the last decade, they said.
The cement industry has been posting heavy losses in the past five years, an expert said.
The challenge is more severe for the cement plants located in northern zone of the country as they have to bear more transportation cost for their raw materials and supplies of their products.
