RAHIM YAR KHAN - Sugar mills mafia is financially exploiting the farmers of South Punjab by purchasing sugarcane through its brokers at prices lower than fixed by the government, lawyers’ leaders said.
Punjab Bar Council member Sardar Abdul Basit Khan and District Bar Association President Farooq Warind were addressing a press conference at District Bar hall. The PbBC member said that sugar mills owners of Southern Punjab were affecting the farmers after hatching a conspiracy to purchase the sugarcane at lower rates which is the economic murder of farmers.
He said that the farmers had complained many times to district administration including the deputy commissioner and ADC Revenue but they had surrendered before the sugar mills mafia. Now the farmers were hopeless regarding their produce, he said. He added that to provide permits transparently for the procurement of sugarcane, there should be a committee consisting of district administration, sugar mills owners, lawyers and judiciary who will ensure the issuance of permits on merit.
The DBA president demanded the CJP take suo motu notice on the issue and provide immediate relief for the sugarcane growers.
