ISLAMABAD - The committee for selection of Vice-Chancellors of Quaid-i-Azam (QAU) and Allama Iqbal Open (AIOU) universities interviewed candidates on Monday to short list three of them to be sent to the President for final selection. President Asif Ali Zardari had constituted a committee headed by Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Javaid R. Leghari for the selection of vice chancellors of QAU and AIOU. Dr Ishrat Hussain, member of the committee did not attend the meeting on Monday, official sources said. When contacted he said, We have given the HEC guidelines for short listing of the candidates. Meanwhile official sources said hat the people at the helm of affairs of the HEC have been calling shots against the spirit of the Presidents appointing the said committee to make the affair independent of the commission as well. Somehow, in the first batch nearly 17 candidates appeared before the committee out of 75 people that had applied for the posts including the incumbent vice chancellor of QAU Qasim Jan. Its important to mention that the representatives of the teaching faculty of QAU had met Shehnaz Wazir Ali, former in charge HEC, and Dr Javaid R. Laghari to express their resentment against the irregularities under the incumbent vice chancellor. The two had assured them to appoint new vice-chancellor and not to extend the tenure of the present vice chancellor.
