LAHORE - Justice Mian Saqib Nisar of Lahore High Court on Monday hearing a petition against adulterated bottled drinking water issued notices to Secretary Public Health Engineering Department and Director Pakistan Council for Water Resources. The judge asked them to tell the court as to how many samples of bottled drinking water had been examined in the recent past. The judge also directed Barrister Sidra, an amicus curie (friend of court), to inspect water plants of two private bottled drinking water supplying companies. Judge asked to submit her report in this regard on next date of hearing. The petition was filed by Watan Party Pakistan through its president Barrister Zafarullah Khan. Petitioner pleaded that he felt aggrieved by the supply of bottled water by various companies which was adulterated, contaminated, stale and mostly filtered tap water. He said the plastic bottles carrying water which made of polyethylene terephthalate, also known as Pet or Pete, had been linked with breast and uterine cancer. It also increased risk of miscarriage and decreased testosterone levels and interferes with bodys natural hormonal messaging system. He said most of the companies supplying bottled water never write on their labels that from where they were getting water. Petitioner said in Pakistan the peoples are drinking in fact tap water or glorified tap water. According to scientists, petitioner said, when bottled water stored in hot or warm temperatures the plastic could easily leach chemicals in the water. Petitioner prayed to the court that all bottled water should be tested from reliable laboratories before supplying for human consumption. Notices served on DG PSB, President PHF The Lahore High Court has issued notices to Director General Pakistan Sports Board, President and Secretary of Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) on a petition challenging qualification of federations secretary. Justice Mian Saqib Nisar also directed the federation to produce complete record of election before the court. Petition was filed by former secretary PHF Naveed Alam submitting that the incumbent secretary Asif Bajwa was holding the office illegally as in violation of federations rules. He said in June 2008 election of the PHF, Najamud Din was elected as Secretary, however, DG PSB through a notification suspended him from the office. And appointed Asif Bajwa as ad-hoc secretary of the federation. He requested the court to set aside the impugned notification by declaring it null and void. This petition will be heard along with an already pending petition of Naveed Alam against new election of the federation. Pre arrest bail dismissed The Chief Justice Lahore High Court Khawaja Muhammad Sharif on Monday dismissed interim pre arrest bail earlier granted to Mukhtar Shah Gillani, a co-accused of Syed Sibtul Hassan alias Double Shah, an accused of defrauding public at large. After the dismissal of bail application the NAB authorities arrested Mukhtar Shah from court premises. The Chief Justice observed that the petitioner-accused could not be granted concession of bail as he remained proclaimed offender for two years. Mukhtar Shah was accused of looting public money to the tune of Rs 180 million. He was arrested along with Double Shah by Ghakkhar police Gujranwala in a Rs 30,000 robbery case. Later, Double Shah was handed over to NAB, which accused him of Rs2 billion fraud on general public.
