A rogue elephant

It is a common misperception among the public that police can do anything at their will and no one could hold them accountable. Although police is a public service organization that was created with the objective of maintaining law and order and help people with their disputes and problems, the department has veered off track and has become an anti-social force. Police must only do what is lawful. In fact, they are governed by a set of rules, yet it is commonplace for police officers to overturn all laws and regulations. These include their own regulations, the procedures laid down by the criminal codes, the orders given by the Supreme Court and the guidelines of the international human rights instruments that Pakistan has ratified. It is important that we must control this force and make it an organization that truly fight crime in the country. Zulfiqar Haider, Islamabad
