As I turned on the news at 4:45pm, I was sent into a state of shock by the breaking news. The letters were bold but simply stated, Governor Punjab Salman Taseer assassinated. Immediately, what came to my mind was later confirmed in the news. He was assassinated by his own guard, on the pretext of his stand on the blasphemy law and Aasia Bibi. There were people who were supporting him on his viewpoint about the law, while there were also people opposing him. But this does not mean that a person expressing his/her viewpoint should be silenced in this manner. In the end this incidence is a stark reminder to all of us, regarding the deteriorating bent of mind in our country. HASSAN BASHIR, Islamabad
