LAHORE City police sealed the entire provincial metropolis and forcibly shut down all the leading shopping malls, markets, and commercial centers to keep the situation under control following the assassination of Punjab Governor Samlan Taseer in the federal capital on Tuesday afternoon. The Punjab government has declared public holiday in the province for Wednesday (today) while all the cinemas and stage theaters were also closed down to mourn the death of PPP top leader. The traders and shopkeepers closed down their businesses soon after the local news channels flashed the tragic story as breaking news on the TV screens. The police blocked all the roads leading towards to Governors House and stepped up armed patrolling in the sensitive and busy localities. Public transport also disappeared from the City roads as the police enhanced snap-checking by putting barricades on the roads to keep a vigilant eye on the activities of the miscreants. However, in some parts of the City the police obstacle and pickets also caused slow traffic movement that led to traffic mess at the busy roads. There was complete shutter down witnessed at the Mall road, Hall Road, Main Boulevard Gulberg, Liberty Market, Ichhra shopping center, Main Boulevard Iqbal Town, Old Anakali and Shah Alam market. The police patrolling was intensified across the City while heavy police contingents were deployed around all the key government installations, educational institutions and religious places of minorities. Thousands of policemen will remain on-guard around the leading arteries of the City on Wednesday (today) as well while extraordinary security arrangements have been made on the occasion of funeral prayer of Governor Punjab to be held in Lahore. Police sources also said that special police squads would also be deployed for the burial of the governor Punjab as additional plainclothesmen would be deputed to avoid any untoward happening on this occasion. A senior police officer, when contacted, said that all the SPs have been directed to personally ensure round-the-clock patrolling in the sensitive and busy localities while top police officer would also monitor the security situation. City district government officials said that at least 8 theaters and 17 cinemas have cancelled Tuesday night shows to mourn the death of governor Punjab. Meanwhile, the main business centers and markets were closed down on Tuesday evening to mourn the assassination of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer. The traders of Shah Alam Market, Mall Road, Hall Road, Bedon Road, Shadman Market, Ichra Market, Abid Market, Ferozepur Road and Mcload Road shuttered soon after the assassination of Salman Taseer. The traders also announced shutter down strike for Wednesday (today) in the City. Soon after hearing of news of the killing of Salman Taseer in Islamabad, dozens of party workers gathered outside the Governor House and staged strong protest demonstration against the assassination of their leader. Heavy police contingents were also on-guard on this occasion to maintain peace and to avoid any untoward happening.
