ISLAMABAD - Chief Election Commissioner, Justice (Retd) Hamid Ali Mirza, Tuesday referred the cases of four MPs to the District Police Officers (DPOs) concerned for registration of criminal cases for their involvement in corrupt practices under section 78(3) (d) of the Representation of the People Act, 1976 that is cognisable offence under section 94 of the said Act. Those whose names have been referred included Sardar Ali, MPA (PK-34), Haji Nasir Mehmood, Ex-MPA (PP-111), Ms. Saima Aziz (Muhi-ud-din) MPA (PP-Reserved) and Ms. Safina Saima Khar, MPA (PP-Reserved). According to the ECP sources, total number of MPs whose cases have been referred for criminal offences has risen to 13. The ECP was conducting enquiry in the cases of fake/invalid degree holders on the direction of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Supreme Court in its judgement had observed that the Election Commission was directed to initiate action against all such persons who committed corrupt practices and used fake documents to contest elections. The ECP/HEC Joint Committee had given them opportunity regarding genuineness of their degrees and to prove the claim of their graduation at the time of filing of nomination papers for the General Elections of February 18, 2008.
