LAHORE Both the opposition and forward bloc legislators drew swords against the PPP for its MPAs unusual act of pointing out quorum that led to ending of the proceedings on Monday when debate on price hike and recent increase in petroleum prices was about to start. Soon after the start of Assembly proceedings on Tuesday, Dr Tahir Ali Javaid stood on point of order and raised the issue of pointing out quorum by a treasury member Shaharyar Khan from Vehari that caused premature ending of the proceedings. The legislators from the opposition and Q-League forward bloc termed the act of a PPP MPA as part of conspiracy to stop debate on the issue of public interest. Minister for Labour Ashraf Sohna said that the PPP was ready for a debate on price hike but the party that wanted discussion on a specific issue should have maintained quorum. He said that the individual act of a MPA has nothing to do with party policy. Dr Tahir Ali Javaid said that said that discussion on price hike was necessary but a PPP legislator pointed out quorum as part of a conspiracy. Amer Sultan Cheema said that the chair previously suspended him (Cheema) for pointing out quorum but this time no such action was taken against the PPP legislator. Ijaz Shafi suggested the chair to relax rules and suspend routine proceedings to carryout debate on the important issue of increase in petroleum prices. Mohsan Leghari said that a resolution on the issue was pending and it should be taken up out of turn to convey the sense of the House to the federal government. He stressed upon adopting a resolution as according to him merely a debate would serve no purpose. He suggested the speaker to suspend rules and accommodate his resolution out of turn. Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the business advisory committee has laid out procedures for taking up resolutions. IQTIDAR GILANI
