LAHORE - The Shahdara police registered it’s the first “bogus” FIR of the New Year, booking five people for gambling, sources said Wednesday.

According to the sources, the five accused namely Naveed Khan, Ahmed Subhani, Habib, Ghulam Rasool Nasir and Zahid Hussain were booked over the charges of gambling.

Police arrested two people Ghulam Rasool and Zahid and said that the other ran away.

“Ghulam Rasool is an assistant to local goldsmith market president Muhammad Tufail, but he is being implicated by two ASIs and a front man of Shahdara SHO Maqsood Gujjar,” a resident, Durab Husnain said. He claimed that police tortured the two detainees publicly.

“Though a delegation of notables, led by MPA Rana Iqbal’s son Rana Nasar, reached the police station to tell the police that the detainees were innocent, they lodged the FIR against them over the charges of gambling,” he said.

He challenged police statement about the ‘runaway’ men. “ASI Mian Mujtaba, ASI Muhammad Hafeez and head constable Rana Sultan say Naveed, Ahmed and Habib fled from the scene but the three can not run because of their bulky bodies.” Durab said. When contacted, an officer said policemen often do so for vested interests but he promised that the case would be investigated on merit.
