The dawn of a new year is usually a time of hope and ambition, of dreams for the future and thoughts of a better life. But it has been long time since many of us looked forward to the new year with such anxiety, even dread. Here in Pakistan, many economists believe that by the end of 2012 we could well have slipped into a devastating situation as rulers have neither wisdom nor foresight. They are busy minting money.

The coalition remains delicately poised; it would take only a dozen resignations to provoke a wider schism and a general election. Prime Minister and his minister now openly say, come what may they are going to complete the term. That means another one year to make money and nothing else. People are now getting disillusioned with democracy, army as well as the government.
