Culpable indifference

THE nefarious designs of the government in the occupied state of Jammu and Kashmir to transfer hundreds of acres of land to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board for building structures for Hindu yatrees is yet another proof of India's wish to exercise its hegemony in the region. It also flies in the face of the Indian government's claim that it is a secular state respecting individual freedom and dignity. True, the government there has revoked the decision, but it was in fact the statewide protests and the killings of a number of protesters, which compelled it to step back. The death of a 16-year-old boy shot by Indian troops during the riots, lends credibility to the reports of the security forces stationed there being engaged in serious human rights violations. But it is rather sad to know that while the people in the Occupied territory were facing the wrath of the Indian army, no voice was raised by our power circles condemning New Delhi's action. Likewise there was no one from the Muslim world standing up and telling the Indians of their double standards.
