Mr Polio-dispenser

The Sindh Minister for Health Dr. Sagheer Ahmed has said that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) may spread polio in Sindh (see newspapers of 23rd June). One wonders if the learned minister is aware of the fact that his department is being held responsible for shocking discovery of the polio cases in Sindh recently. And this, despite millions of rupees spent on anti polio vaccination campaigns in Karachi during the previous whole decade. At this function where he made this statement, the minister, while replying to a question regarding a new case of polio in Tando Allahyar, also told the press that contaminated water is the cause of polio, especially in rural areas where clean potable water is very difficult to obtain. Now one wonders whether our learned minister can enlighten the public, whom he otherwise probably considers fools, as to how the polio really spreads and why the vaccinations provided by many (reputable) foreign donor agencies during past several years failed to control the virus in Sindh while he was incharge? -MUHAMMAD INAMUL HAQ, Karachi, via e-mail, June 27.
