Inquiry of delay in sugar import ordered

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has directed an inquiry in delay in import of sugar. According to a private TV channel, in March, it was decided to import 1.2 million ton sugar till June 30, 2010 aimed to remove gap between supply and demand of sugar in the country. The prices of sugar were reduced at the end of March and prices were not increased till June 15 but TCP failed to import sugar and price of the commodity increased from $ 480 per ton to $ 680 per ton. The channel while quoting sources said that the delay caused loss of Rs. 15 to 20 billion. Most of the contracts were awarded on the political basis, reported the channel.
