Positive initiative

Nothing could be more fascinating to hear than what Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced the other day that no foreign financial aid would be accepted for development projects. He was right because Pakistan had a bitter experience of accepting foreign financial aid and thus allowing deep penetration to foreigners representing the donor countries. Shahbaz Sharifs initiative impliedly means that we should learn to depend on our own resources through which we could achieve the noble objective of self-reliance. After taking this important decision, the Punjab Chief Minister has chosen the path to seek technical cooperation and investment in vital sectors. It was in this context that he picked up Britain to seek its expertise to revamp and revitalise the primary and technical education. Initially he held a detailed meeting with the British High Commissioner in Lahore that paved the way for his visit to England. He embarked upon his journey to London on Sunday and while talking to media persons, he clarified that his objective was to bring about investment in education sector and benefit from the expertise of British trainers and planners. Future cooperation between Punjab government and Britain would largely benefit the poor masses whose children are deprived of opportunities to send them to school where quality education is imparted. Of course the education is one of the vital factors in development of any society, yet there are other areas that Shahbaz Sharif must shift his focus to including shortage of electricity and gas. Needless to say that predominantly planning for overcoming the menace of loadshedding is responsibility of the Federal Government. Yet, there are ways and means to rid the province of these crises. One wishes the Punjab Chief Minister success in achievement of his objectives during his discussions with British authorities. Similarly, China with which Punjab is already cooperating in some areas can be of great help to develop rural population.
