DIR UPPER A grand jirga Saturday expressed dismay over the government performance and said the casualties in Afghan militants attack on police check post in Dir Upper might not have been so much, if the law enforcement agencies personnel present there were timely assisted. The jirga was held here at Warai police station to discuss the prevailing situation. Besides others, tribesmen from Sultan Khel and Painda Khel like Malak Behram Khan, Malak Faiz Mohammad Khan, Malak Sher Bahadar Khan, Malak Naushad Khan, Sana Ullah Khan, Syed Anwar Khan, Sultan Yousaf, Malak Bakht Sher and Raza Ullah Khan. DIG Malakand, Qazi Jamil-ur-Rehman, DPO Dir Upper, Meer Qasim and other government senior officials also attended the jirga. The jirga said the lack of sophisticated arms, ammunitions and assistance caused the death of so many personnel of law enforcement agencies, which was the grim picture of Dir Upper Afghan militants attack on Shaltalu check post. Reportedly 30 law enforcers had been killed in the tragic incident. The jirga members said the casualties could be far less if the police on duty at the site were well equipped with sophisticated arms. How can a policeman with a single outdated gun fight with hundreds of militants fully equipped with firearms, they questioned. They criticised that casualties might not have been so much in the Afghan militants attacks on Shaltalu check post and adjacent areas, if they were timely assisted. The participants of the jirga vowed to protect their soil against militants, however, they said it was the governments responsibility to protect citizens and safeguard frontiers of the country. Announcing war against the militants, the jirga participants said they would continue supporting security forces in this regard. On this occasion, DIG, Qazi Jamil-ur-Rehman said that sophisticated weapons would be provided to police in the area. In addition, he said, a special package would be provided to the policemen who lost their lives in the incident, while their relative would be recruited in police force.
