ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has great potential in all sporting fields, however the only thing what it lacks is proper exposure to sportsmen so that they could bring laurels to the country. Here is an example of Rohail Waqar, who in an exclusive interview with TheNation has revealed some interesting facts about his achievements and his family background. Rohail belongs to a swimming family. His father Waqar Azim, an honorary secretary of Punjab Swimming Association was a renowned swimmer of his time and had represented Pakistan universities at international level. Rohails elder brother Abdul Rahim Waqar also took part in the Pakistan universities swimming championships. Ill ever remain grateful to Kamran Lashari President Pakistan Swimming Federation, Secretary Maj Majid Waseem and Zoraiz Lashari, President Punjab Swimming Association for their patronage, Rohail said. Their encouragement and support enabled him to excel and achieve this unique feat of winning 14 gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal in the recently held Pakistan universities swimming championship 2011 at Lahore, he revealed. He made new record first time in the history of Pakistan Inter Universities Championships by winning 14 gold medals. Rohail has requested Sports Minister Engr Shaukat Ullah Khan, Gen Arif Hasan, President, POA and Syed Ameer Hamza Gilani, Director General, Pakistan Sports Board to support him financially and send him abroad for training. Here are some achievements of Rohail Waqar; he won gold medals in Lahore District Swimming competition, Inter District Swimming event, Inter Provincial Swimming, Inter Collegiate from Punjab College of Commerce Lahore in 2006-2008, Lahore Board from Lahore Board 2006-2008, He won bronze medals, appearing from Punjab, All Pakistan Open Governor Gold Cup in 2008 from Punjab. All Pakistan Inter Universities Swimming Championship in 2009 and declared Best Swimmer with seven gold medals, four silvers and two bronze medals and set one new record in 200m Breast Stroke while appearing from University of Central Punjab. In All Pakistan Inter-University Swimming & Water Polo Championship 2010, got four golds, two silvers and two bronze medals in swimming and a gold medal in Water Polo Championship from University of Central Punjab. In National Swimming Championship 2010 he got bronze medal while appearing from HEC. Won the title of Best Swimmer with 14 golds, one silver and one bronze with 181 points in All Pakistan Inter University Swimming Championship 2011 and its a record of an athlete winning 14 gold medals for the first time in the history of Inter University Pakistan Championships, participating from University of Central Punjab (UCP) in which he won gold medal in 200m, 400m, 1500m free-style, 200m, 100m, 50m breast-stroke, 200m, 100m butterfly, 400m, 200m individual medley and 200m backstroke. After with all these records, Rohail deserves to be sent abroad for proper training, as he has the ability to bring good name to the country.
