ISLAMABAD  - Principal Secretary to Prime Minister (PSPM) Khawaja Sadiq Akber on Tuesday went on a long leave giving credence to conspiracy theories that he expected a harsh treatment at the hands of the incoming government.
Sadiq was to retire in July this year. His move to leave the office one month ahead of his due retirement raised many eyebrows in the federal capital.
Sadiq, once very close to Sharifs in the Punjab setup under Shahbaz Sharif from 1997-99, however, later switched his loyalties in the Musharraf era. He came close to the PPP circles lately and was elevated first as Secretary Interior and recently as PSPM during the caretaker government. Sadiq is reportedly a cousin of incoming federal minister Khawaja Asif, and is known in his close circles for having fondness for snakes. Some of his close buddies also call him "Sapan Wala".
Officials, however, told this reporter, Sadiq has chosen to go on leave shortly before his retirement following the allegations of alleged corruption and misuse of power during his stint as Principal Secretary to PM.
The sources maintained that allegations of corruption and misuse of authority put Khawaja Saddique under immense pressure and forced him to apply for leave that the caretaker Prime Minister accepted.
According to sources, during his tenure as Interior Secretary, he received more than 5000 directives from special private secretary to the former Interior Minister Rehman Malik, for release of official passport for non-officials. Reportedly Rehman's brother Khalid Malik had allegedly taken bribe in billions of rupees in the same scam. Moreover, Sadiq had allegedly taken money from a former MNA for removing his name from the Police Foundation Housing scam.
During the tenure as PSPM to caretaker prime Minister Saddique pressurised many secretaries and Chairman CDA for implementing his illegal orders, and even resorted to foul language, officials complained.
The new PSPM Nasir Khosa will take his charge day after tomorrow when the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will administer his oath.
Now a days Nasir Khosa is said to be interviewing the well-reputed bureaucrats who have been short-listed by his bosses at Raiwand for placement in federal bureaucracy. Former PSPM Saeed Mehdi and Touqeer Shah secretary CM Punjab have also sent a list of bureaucrats for appointment of lucrative post in the federal capital.
The sources said that Sami Saeed, Fawad Hassan Fawad, Tahir Shahbaz, Seerat Asghar, Ch. Qamar-ur-Zaman have been shortlisted as Secretaries for important ministries in the first phase. They will be appointed after consultation with concerned ministers.
