ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) is all set to bring miseries for the entire nation as it has finally decided to bring the weakest Pakistan team to the World Squash Team Championship to be held in France from June 9-14.

The players, which the federation had selected, performed very badly in the PSA events recently in Hong Kong and Kuwait where Farhan Mahboob and Nasir Iqbal bowed out in the first round while Farhan Zaman was crushed in the quarterfinals by Danish Atlas and the fourth player Sh Saqib couldn't even make it in to the first round in Kuwait as he was thrown out in the qualifiers. How on earth the PSF is depending on winning laurels for the country from these players, who can't even win against low-ranked players? How they will face the likes of world's top players? Pakistan's pool is not an easy one by all means as France has the services of world's top player while same is the case with Netherlands and Russia which have also some quality players in their ranks, so it makes no sense that head coach Jamshed Gul is claiming he is eyeing top two finish in the pool.

Despite new rules allowing every participating country to file five players instead of four, the PSF is not ready to take their best and No 1 player Aamir Atlas Khan, who has proved his mettle by winning the Asian Individual gold medal and that too after a gap of almost 15 years, citing financial constrains but on the other hand, PSF secretary Abdul Wahab Marwat is once again going for a joy ride to France as he is accompanying the team as manager. Marwat had gone to Korea too. What is the purpose of taking the secretary to every other destination, who can't even provide timely news to the media. If funds situation is not satisfactory for a world class player like Aamir who can play a major role for the country in the championship, then how on earth the secretary has the liberty to waste the precious national exchequer and tax payers’ money on his joy ride trip.

The PSF must stop to befool masses and especially players. Double standards of the federation had already damaged this sport badly and the so-called well wishers of squash have been doing their utmost to wipe out squash completely from Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan had filed five names with the WSF and Aamir’s name is included in that list. Until June 8, the PSF has to finalise the four-member squad to represent Pakistan in the world's prestigious event, instead of playing mind games and relying on miracles, the federation must use common sense setting aside personal grudge with Aamir and for the sake of the country, recall Aamir and drop Sh Saqib to stand any real chance of producing satisfactory results, otherwise the writing is very much on the wall, with this squad, it is very much likely Pakistan will bow out at first hurdle and no one else but the federation will be held responsible for that episode, as they are fully aware about their weaknesses, but their egos are not letting them to take the right decision yet.

The PSF president must take notice of the prevailing situation and only his immediate intervention can save the blushes of Pakistan from sure shot embarrassment. Otherwise, history will once again repeat itself and Pakistan team can face the similar fate they had faced in Germany where they finished 22nd which was the Pakistan's poorest result till date.

When this scribe contacted PSF secretary Abdul Wahab Marwat to seek his comments, he replied: “We will take four players, who are required in France and we have selected the team after trial matches so there will be no further addition. These four wil represent Pakistan in the World Team Squash Event.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Farhan Mahboob, Farhan Zaman, Nasir Iqbal and Sh Saqib reached Mushaf Ali Mir Squash Complex on Tuesday. With less than three days remaining in their departure, boys have not played as a team at all. So we can’t expect a good show from these players.
