Team for Bangladesh series named

LAHORE - The Pakistan Cricket Board Wednesday announced a 16-member team for the tour of Bangladesh here on Wednesday with the surprise exclusion of Abdur Rauf. Addressing a press conference here at the Gaddafi Stadium, chief selector Abdul Qadir announced the Pakistan squad for playing a series of five One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals in Bangladesh. But questioned the fitness of Abdur Rauf and put him in reserve players. However, Shoaib Akhtar was not even considered for the standby list. Qadir said Akhtar had yet to prove his fitness. "We asked Akhtar to play in a first-class match but he didn't play, so we did not consider him as he is still to attain full fitness," said Qadir. Akhtar missed the Sri Lankan series due to knee injury. Rauf in the last three domestic seasons took nearly 450 wickets in 90 matches and was the top wicket-taker of these seasons and even in the last three match of the Quaid Trophy he took 29 wickets including a hat-trick against Peshawar. But the selection committee is finding his fitness wanting. The chief selector also included Mohammad Aamir, who was talked of very highly and leg spinner Yasir Shah after the performance of Danish Kaneria in the recent series against Sri Lanka. "We have included some youngsters with an eye on the future," said Qadir, who thinks Shah will be a future replacement for Danish Kaneria in the spin department. The team departs on March 7 and play the first of two Twenty20 matches on March 10. The other Twenty20 and the first three one-day matches are scheduled for Dhaka. The last two one-day matches will be played in Chittagong.
