LAHORE - The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (Unisame) has urged the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to facilitate and promote mortgage financing of housing, commercial and industrial property for SMEs and the economy as a whole as 96 percent of the businesses are family owned. President Unisame Zulfikar Thaver said that mortgage financing of houses, shops, workshops, and factories would directly and indirectly promote SMEs and the economy. He said the construction industry would get a real boost as it will be financed indirectly through increase demand of houses, commercial and industrial units. He also urged Syed Salim Raza Governor SBP to announce a package for mortgage financing for SMEs based on repayment of 20 years period with affordable mark-up, which would enable the homeless to own a home and the unemployed to set up their own shops, workshops, warehouses or factories.
