ISLAMABAD  – Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) Secretary General Senator Mushahid Hussain was elected member of the Eminent Persons Council, representing Pakistan, at the 3rd Forum of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Think Tanks Forum, which was held in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan.

Other countries in the Eminent Persons Council include Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sudan, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Qatar, said a press release issued here on Sunday. Think tanks from all 57-member states of OIC are taking part in the Forum, which has now become an annual feature.

Announcing the schedule of the Forum, it was decided to hold 2013 meeting in Cairo, the 2014 Forum in Baghdad and the conference accepted Senator Mushahid Hussain’s invitation to hold the 6th Forum of OIC Think Tanks in Islamabad in 2015. Terming his election to the Eminent Persons Council of the OIC Think Tanks as a ‘great honour for Pakistan’, Senator Mushahid Hussain referred to Pakistan’s historic contributions in support of Muslim causes right from independence, including Palestine, the freedom movements in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, the defence training imparted to Egypt, Syan, the UAE, Oman, Bahrein and Saudi Arabia. 

He also referred to Pakistan hosting Afghan refugees and support for Bosnia. He said as member of the UN Security Council, Pakistan spoke up for Muslim causes.

In his speech, Senator Mushahid Hussain urged the OIC member countries to match their words with their deeds and to play an active role on causes such as Kashmir and Palestine. He urged the ruling regimes in Muslim countries to work for removing grievances of their people.

Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohammed, was the chief guest at the Forum and Senator Mushahid Hussain had a good meeting with the Malaysian leader, who fondly talked of his various visits to Pakistan.
