LAHORE – In yet another brutal incident, a security guard of the Punjab University has been tortured to death by the Muslim Town Police couple of days back, the Punjab University spokesman alleged on Sunday.

Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran and other departments of the university condemned the alleged killing of the guard Imran in police custody.

The VC demanded of the police authorities to conduct fair investigation into the incident and provide justice to the bereaved family.

According to the spokesman, Muhammad Imran, a security guard at the Statistics Department, was taken into custody by Muslim

Town police on February 18 after an FIR was registered against him on theft charges of a motorbike parked outside the hostel. Police investigators claimed the FIR (536/12) was lodged on statement of a student Zahid Shah, who blamed the aforesaid security guard stolen his motorbike. Following the directives by the highs-ups, police arrested three security guards including Sajjad Mehmood, Muhammad Kaleem and Muhammad Imran. Police, however, sent Imran to jail on February 22.

“Imran was detained in police custody for six days and was brutally tortured by police officials. He was also released on Feb 24, but due to his critical condition, he was admitted to the Jinnah Hospital on February 29. After five days of treatment, on Sunday morning he breathed his last,” one of the family members disclosed. He further said Imran was not on duty when the alleged incident took place. Actually, there were other security guards with similar names on duty but due to negligence of police and administration, Imran was arrested, which led to his abrupt death.

“We did our best to satisfy police and complainant and to minimize misunderstanding but police officers continued their traditional way of investigation and tortured Imran brutally which results in his death on Sunday,” he stated.

Making remarks on the incident, the PU spokesperson said Dr Mujahid Kamran constituted a five-member committee and asked concerned DSP and SHO for detailed inquiry.

Meanwhile, activists of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba staged a protest demonstration against the police on killing of Punjab University security guard. The protesters chanted slogans against police and PU administration and alleged that PU VC was the responsible for killing.
