KARACHI  - Leaders of different political parties and social organisations, besides a large number of civil society activists thronged at a '10 years-10 days camp' at the Press Club here Monday on the completion of 10 years of the detention of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.

Those who visited the camp to express solidarity with Dr Aafia included central vice president of Tehreek-e-Insaf Pakistan Najeeb Haroon, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Karachi division president Nihal Hashmi, chairperson of Business and Professional Women Forum Shamim Kazmi, Mehfooz Yar Khan of Awami Muslim League (AML) and others.

Pictures depicting different aspects of life and struggle of Dr Aafia, her decade-long detention and endeavours of civil society and human rights groups to raise voice against her illegal custody were displayed in the camp.

This 10-day nationwide campaign is aimed at to highlight the ten years of incarceration spent by Dr Aafia with heroic courage and bravery.

It may be noted that Dr Aafia Siddiqui was kidnapped from Karachi in March 2003 along with her three minor children. No one knew about their whereabouts for five years. Later, Dr Aafia suddenly got a global prominence as the prisoner number 650. She was critically injured in firing, shifted from Afghanistan to the USA and handed 86-year sentence without any solid evidence and the decision of jury.

This episode of sheer injustice posed serious questions about the US justice system. It also exposed the false promises and tall claims of coalition rulers of Pakistan during last five years that Dr Aafia could be repatriated to Pakistan within hours and it just needed a signature of the president. Sadly, during these five years, the rulers never took any serious step for the repatriation of Dr Aafia.

The political and social leaders, civil society activists and people belonging to different walks of life visiting the 10-years 10-days camp regretted that the government wasted precious years in just lip-service and passing hollow resolutions. They said the whole nation must have to play a proactive role to secure early release of Aafia. They said the voters in the coming electioneering would have the right to ask the politicians what they did for the release of Aafia Siddiqui. They said Dr Aafia is the daughter of nation and whole nation fully supports her; however, the governments of the US and Pakistani have yet to recognise these feelings of masses.
