LAHORE - The Centennial play “Echoes-Bazgasht” was staged at Kinnaird College on Monday by the Najmuddin Dramatics Society. This play was specially arranged for the old students to celebrate the 100 years of Kinnaird College.

The great grand daughter of Sir Arther and Lady Mary Kinnaird Caroline Best was the chief guest on the occasion. This year production traces the history of Kinnaird over years and brings back to life the old memories narrated through the tree spirits symbolically representing the old trees of Kinnaird which become the story teller.

The historical narration was dramatically enacted out by young and talented students as chorus, tree spirits, characters from play Anarkali, Insects and the Merchant of Venice. The sets for the play were fabulously designed by the brilliant students of the college. There were colourful costumes for the actors and lights were well handled.

The play was written by Perin Boga, Kausar Sheikh and was directed by Prof. Shama Khaliq Salman and her team which included Dr Nadia Anjum, Asma Niaz, Maham Sarfraz and Amna Haider.

A large number of audience including KC Principal Dr Ruksana David, Vice Principal Dr Nikhat Khan, Faculty and students were present on the occasion.  Najmuddin Dramatics Society has a long tradition of exploring new themes and dramatic talent for fabulous performances. Najmuddin dramatic society was named after Mrs. Najmuddin who was an English teacher in early days of Kinnaird. She was the big source of inspiration for the students to show their ability and talent. Later on Perin Boga supervised the production of dramas in Kinnaird. The audience included old students of Kinnaird who thoroughly enjoyed the performance and applauded the centennial play.

Convocation: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran on Monday said that the rulers of the country were responsible for educational disaster in country and they did not realise how knowledge was important for respectable survival in the world. He was addressing the annual convocation of Hailey College of Commerce New Campus on Monday.

PU HCC Principal Dr Liaqat Ali, senior faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion. Addressing the ceremony, the VC said that because of education-friendly policies of the current administration, PU had produced more than 200 PhDs last year. He said that knowledge was the source of power and respect but no nation could become knowledgeable without the strength of character. He said that the average spending of the world was around 4-5 percent of GDP on education but on the contrary, we were reducing our spending on education. He said that the average spending of the world on education was 4 to 5 percent on education in average.

Two-Day Int’l Punjabi Conference at PU: Oriental College’s Department of Punjabi is organising a two-day International Conference starting from today (Tuesday) at Sherani Hall (Old Campus). PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran will be the chief guest on inaugurating session while Ch Aitzaz Ahsan, Justice (r) Syed Afzal Haider, renowned journalist Mujeebur Rehman Shami, Abdul Rasheed Bhatti, Fakhar Zaman, Malik Muhammad Ashraf, Mudassar Iqbal Butt, Sohail Ahmed, faculty members, students and a large number of renowned personalities related to Punjabi Literature will also attend the conference. The conference will be continued till March 6.
