KARACHI  - The Supreme Court has directed the City government and KMC to issue notices to the persons involved in encroachments immediately and initiate action against them.

A 3-member bench of the SC took up for hearing Monday the petition filed by former Nazim of KMC Nematullah Khan. The court was told by Karachi city government that action was continuing against the encroachments and a plan had been evolved in this respect. However more time is needed to complete the plan.

The court observed, "Whosoever comes seeks only time and is not prepared to take action. The beauty of public parks has been vandalised. State owned land lies under illegal occupation every where. Historical heritage is also not safe from land grabbers. Markets and bazaars are seething with encroachments and government will have to devise strategy in this connection".

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked, "Land mafia has neither spared the government-run schools nor public parks. Roads have gone shrunk so much due to encroachments that traffic system has gone disrupted. Public parks have been built for the sake of recreation of people. Erection of encroachments therein and their use on commercial basis is a heinous crime in the eyes of law".

The court while allowing time till March 28 to the city government and KMC, has sought detailed report on this count. The hearing of the case has been adjourned till March 28.
