Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said journalists must take the national interest first and use their power for reformation of society instead of disrespecting mankind and spoiling cultures.

Speaking at a conference related to security of journalists organized by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists in Islamabad on Tuesday afternoon‚ he said heroin was also used as a weapon against USSR occupation troops in Afghanistan but later it became a monster for Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Rehman Malik said that terrorism is being used as a tool to achieve certain negative objectives. He said in a couple of days with final approval from the Prime Minister‚ a Journalist Welfare Trust will be constituted through which journalists' families will be compensated.

The Minister said incidents of Quetta and Karachi were worst kind of terror unleashed by a militant group. He appreciated Pakistani journalists for covering of war on terror despite serious risks and threats to their lives.

He said nowhere in the world‚ journalists are sent to war zones without proper training‚ gadgets and security protection but in Pakistan journalists have been covering terrorism on their own risk.

The Interior Minister said there should be a contributory fund to take care of journalists performing professional duties in war zones.
