Nottinghamshire recruit Sammy for T20

LONDON - English county Nottinghamshire announced on Wednesday that they have signed West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy for part of this year's domestic T20 Blast competition. Sammy, who captained the West Indies to World Twenty20 glory in 2012, will play four matches in late May and early June, and could return later in the competition if Nottinghamshire reach the knockout stage. "It's a gap between the IPL and the Caribbean Premier League where Darren was available and keen to play," said Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell. "He's an explosive Twenty20 player, with a reputation around the world for being a good player and a good bloke. We're looking forward to welcoming him to the team and hope he can help us achieve a good season in the NatWest T20 Blast."–AFP

JA Zaman Open Golf commences today

LAHORE - The four-day 2nd JA Zaman Open Golf Championship will roll into action today (Thursday) here at the Lahore Gymkhana golf course. Addressing the media, Convener Gymkhana Golf Agha Ali Imam, flanked by Hamid Zaman of Zaman Family, captain golf Sardar Murad Khan, tournament director Omer Zia and media director Kh Pervaiz Saeed, said this championship was a welcome addition to the golf calendar in 2013 and now would be held for the second year running in memory of the late JA Zaman, an icon of national repute and standing. Hamid Zaman said that during his lifetime, JA Zaman was regarded as a supporter of sports activity and remained associated with golf at Lahore Gymkhana for over 55 plus years of his 95 years of life. “JA Zaman was known as a philanthropist, a successful entrepreneur, a much loved family man.” Kh Pervaiz informed that top professionals of the country would participate in the event. “The sponsors had offered complete financial support towards holding of this event in a befitting way so that the soul of late JA Zaman feel comforted.” Sardar Murad said that the event carried handsome cash prizes for top performers, besides non-cash awards for the participating amateurs. “The prize money is one million rupees to be distributed amongst forty top position holders while Rs 200,000 are allocated for senior golf professionals.”–Staff Reporter

Trials to select Islamabad U-16 squad

ISLAMABAD - The ICA will conduct three-day trials tomorrow (Friday) to select Islamabad Region U-16 squad for the Pepsi-PCB Stars Programme here at Diamond Cricket Club Ground at 11am. The players born on or after September 1, 1998 are eligible for appearing in the trials. Head coach Islamabad Region Taimoor Azam will be talent hunt officer along with assistant coach Abdul Rauf Mirza. Players belonging to four zones of Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan will be eligible for trials. All the selected players will undergo age verification process to be conducted by NCA medical panel. All the interested players must bring their authenticated NADRA Form-B/age certificate issued by respective schools and would be required to fill up prescribed Performa available with the Talent Hunt Officer.–Staff Reporter

KP, Islamabad in National Jr Basketball final

ISLAMABAD - KP and Islamabad qualified for the National Junior Basketball Championship final after registering victories on the second day of the event at POF Sports Complex, Wah on Wednesday. In the first semifinal, Islamabad carved out sensational two basket victory against Fata, who were not ready to give up and took the match to the wire before going down fighting, but they did manage to win lot of admiration and crowd gave them standing ovation. The match was on knife-edge as all the four quarters were very tight and it was very hard to describe the actual winner. Islamabad scored the winning basket in the dying moments of the match to earn the right to play in the final. Islamabad won 38-36. In the second semifinal, KP was stretched to limit by Punjab, who went down fighting 47-37.–Staff Reporter
