Quite expectedly, the Osama incident has handed on a silver platter the excuse to Pakistans so-called friends, let alone enemy India, to mount intense pressure on it, openly charging it with harbouring militants. Most ominous in their implications have been the remarks of President Obama that though the world has become safer, the US still faces a 9/11-like situation. There has also been a hue and cry in the US Congress, with members calling for the review of aid the Americans are giving and laying stringent conditions on its disbursal, as they questioned the veracity of Islamabads stand that bin Laden simply escaped notice of the ISI the compound was not on our radar, the agency has said. White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan went to the extent of believing, It is inconceivable that bin Laden did not have a support system in (Pakistan) that allowed him to remain there for an extended period of time. Washingtons friends have not lagged behind; in Frances view, Pakistans oversight of Osamas presence is a little difficult to imagine, though Britain while agreeing with it, cautions against picking up a row with Pakistan. And India hardly waited for Navy SEAL raid to end to demand the handing over of Mumbai accused. Whatever the truth about the end result bin Ladens death of the operation, the Wests propaganda blitz has brought Islamabad to a pretty pass in the real sense of the word. Both Washington and New Delhi would exploit it to the hilt, at the same time, besmirching the reputation of our intelligence agencies and rubbishing the credibility of our intentions to eliminate militant forces. Undoubtedly, the onus of proving that there are no other sanctuaries for terrorists in the area under our control would fall on Pakistan. And the calls for an immediate military action in North Waziristan would become more strident to prevent the deaths of ISAF troops in Afghanistan and make the country safe and secure after they had withdrawn. No one will listen to Prime Minster Gilanis pleas to end the 'hostile propaganda let loose against Pakistan, post-Abbottabad. It will be a real test of Pakistans diplomacy to convince the world that it is serious about rooting out terrorism from its land, and that unilateral and unauthorised action against Pakistan poses threat to world peace. For them, the greatest threat at the moment is terrorism, and unless convincingly assured that we are with them in this exercise of eliminating it, they could go to any length. The emerging scenario proves beyond any doubt that the US is no friends of ours, that it distrusts us as an ally in the war on terror. Only China has come out with unqualified praise for the efforts we have put in towards that end, and at what cost. The complexity of depressing circumstances in which we now find ourselves in should bring home to our leadership the point that our present choices are completely flawed and there is need for a redirection of foreign policy to ensure that the integrity and sovereignty of our homeland remain unharmed. And Beijing alone beckons us with hope.
