KARACHI - The drop scene of the politically-motivated Lyari operation seemed to have paved way for the escape of gangsters. The withdrawal of law enforcers from Lyari has raised several questions. The eight-day long cold-blooded operation, which claimed 38 lives failed to reach its logical climax.On Friday, at least eight rockets were fired in Cheel Chowk, Gabool Park and Afshani Gali, wounding two cops, namely Naeem and Shahid. In Singholane, Afshani Street and Cheel Chowk, heavy firing by unidentified criminals wounded four people. Nevertheless, police claimed to have destroyed a post of Lyari gangsters in Afshani Street and seized two rockets, four hand grenades, two repeaters, two 222 rifles and hundreds of bullets. But no one was arrested.Outlawed PAC chairman Uzair Baloch at a meeting in Lyari football asked residents of Lyari whether he should surrender. But, the people replied in negative. He, therefore, decided to follow the voice of his people. Gangsters also fired two hand grenades in Lea Market and Nippier area, killing a bus conductor, namely Mohammad Younis, and wounding a passer-by Mohammad Khan. After failing to get any considerable success, the Frontier Constabulary was withdrawn from Lyari on Friday evening. As many as 38 people, including 5 policemen, were killed and over 150 wounded in the weeklong gunbattle between the police and gangsters. Following a long meeting during which several officers expressed their reservations over the operation, IG Sindh Mushtaq Shah announced that Lyari Operation was being suspended for 48 hours.Meanwhile, spokesman for the Mohajir Sooba Tehreek on Friday expressed serious concerns over the government’s announcement to halt the ongoing anti-criminal operation in Lyari. In a statement, Syed Ali urged political and religious parties not to politicise the operation. He demanded them to condemn terrorist acts of Lyari-based criminals. He added that only the Mohajir community could foil the anti-social conspiracies of the Balochistan Liberation Army and Sindhudesh Liberation Army.He questioned the non-deployment of Rangers in Lyari, despite the fact that 32 people were killed in firing of gangsters. He also called on the army chief to prevent the common man from the criminals.He said that Lyari gangsters were using hand grenades and rockets in the operation and questioned where this ammunition came from. Ali requested the armed forces to play their role for the establishment of Mohajir province on administrative basis.
