ISLAMABAD - Director General Agri and Biotechnology, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Yusuf Zafar has been declared ‘Scientist of the Year-2012’ by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC).

The applications for this award are invited every year by the ICAC, based at Washington DC, from across the globe and the selection committee is comprised of five anonymous judges outside the ICAC Secretariat.

ICAC is an intergovernmental body with 54 members and provides services to Common Funds for Commodity (CFC), an organization of UNCTAD-UN family.

Dr. Yusuf Zafar has worked at PAEC’s National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad of which he is one of the founding figures. This centre is engaged in R&D on biotechnology related fields and offers M.PhiI/Ph.D. studies.

It may be recalled that Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission is running four agriculture research centres namely NIFA, Peshawar, NIAB, Faisalabad, NIBGE, Faisalabad and NIA, Tandojam. These centres have evolved numerous agricultural services and have developed more than 74 high-yield crop varieties contributing enormously to the socio-economic uplift of the country.
