Punjab Assembly passes 8 bills, Opposition stages walk-out

LAHORE - The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday passed eight bills, a rare happening on private members day.

Amid walkout from the Opposition, Treasury got passed the Punjab Sugar Factories Control (Amendment) Bill 2020; the Punjab Infectious Diseases (Prevention and Control) Bill; Ravi Urban Development Authority; Punjab Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2021; Lahore Central District Business Authority Bill 2021; Punjab Letters of Administration and Succession Certificates Bill, Punjab Enforcement of Women Property Rights Bill 2021; and Emerson University Multan, Bill.

Whereas the University of Child Health Sciences Bill 2021 and Punjab Educational Institutions Bill 2021 were introduced.

The session started two hours 50 minutes behind the scheduled time with Speaker Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in the chair.

Criticising Treasury for putting government business on the agenda on private members day, the Opposition members staged walkout from the House.

Earlier, PML-N’s Awais Laghari condemned use of force against Tehreek-Labaik Pakistan ( TLP) workers who were demanding the government to expel French Ambassador for publication of blasphemous cartoons in Charlie Hebdo magazine. He demanded Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to come to the House and respond to the allegations.

PA Speaker lauded the Law Minister for his role in peaceful handling of banned outfit Tahreek Labbaik Pakistan’s protest.

The chair recalled that the House had unanimously passed a law on mentioning the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as the last Prophet (PBUH) in all textbooks.

He also applauded Prime Minister Imran Khan for what he said taking a bold position on the honour of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and talked to Ambassadors of Islamic countries for taking a joint stance on the issue. He hoped that the Prime Minister would take the issue to other international forums too.

Law Minister presented a condolence resolution on the demise of late MPA Waris Kalu, IA Rehman and Zia Shahid.

On completion of agenda, the chair adjourned the session till Wednesday (today) at 11:30am.
