Rawalpindi - A customs, taxation and anti-smuggling court yesterday reserved its verdict on acquittal plea of model Ayyan Ali in currency smuggling case. Special Judge Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan reserved the verdict after completion of arguments from defence and the prosecution.

Sardar Latif Khan Khosa Advocate filed acquittal plea of Ayyan Ali who was arrest at Benazir Bhutto Islamabad International Airport on March 14 while trying to smuggle US $506800 illegally out of country. Ayyan Ali appeared before the court along with her counsel Sardar Latif Khan Khosa.

Khosa argued that his client was innocent and should be acquitted from the case. He added that Ayyan lived in Dubai along with her mother and brother and obtained a passport having category of student. He said that she had permanent visa of Dubai and she owned a house in the world’s costly tower. He said that Ayyan earned respect for Pakistan in the field of modelling while 41 journals and newspapers printed her pictures on front pages and declared her number one model of Asia. “My client was roped in a fake case and was also kept in jail for four months which was an injustice,” he said adding that he wanted to file an application for getting back her passport but later changed his mind owing to change in the charge-sheet submitted by the investigators. On this, the judge directed the defence counsel to irrelevant arguments.

Opposing the arguments, Pakistan Customs lawyer Farhat Nawaz Lodhi said that Ayyan Ali made a failed attempt to smuggle currency to Dubai as she was arrested at the airport. She added that as per law no passenger could carry more than US $10,000 via airline while Ayyan was carrying US $506800 which was a crime and a case was also registered against her. She said that the accused model could not prove his statements she recorded before the investigators that she earned the amount by selling her property. She said that there was sharp contradiction between the testimonies of the property dealer and the accused. She urged the court to indict the accused model in money smuggling case.

The court reserved the verdict and fixed Nov 6 for the announcement of the verdict in the high profile case.

After the hearing, Ayyan Ali was surrounded by a large number of her fans including an old man namely Sheikh Masood, who presented a gift of earrings to the model after breaching the security circle. Earlier on Tuesday, the elderly admirer gifted Ayyan Ali a ring and flower necklace when she appeared in the court. He while talking to media men said that he liked Ayyan Ali and would come court premises on all her appearances.
