According to media reports three workers of a textile factory died while two others were rescued after they fell into a chemical tank in Bin Qasim industrial area in Karachi. This shows that there were no proper safety arrangements for the labourers in the factory. Unfortunately, safety and security remains a significant issue in textile sector of Pakistan. There are limited checks on exhaust systems, light systems, and waste water disposal. The national and international standards & regulations are being not followed and implemented accurately in textile factories. The main, machine and material need safety and security in every industry. Modern occupational safety and health legislation usually demands that a risk assessment be carried out prior to making an intervention. There is a dire need to take remedial actions, ranging from independent monitoring of factories, and their modernisation. I request the Federal Minister of Commerce and Textile industries, Khurram Dastgir, to ensure sustainable improvement in safety and working conditions in factories.
